MAC Spring/Summer 2009 Trend Report

Trend #1: Artifice
Unconventional is the key here. Think unexpected colors and finishes and textural contradiction.

From Runway to Every Day
Be creative. Experiment. Pair super glossy lips with chalk matte skin and use colors that clash.

Trend #2: Black to Earth
This season’s black eye is “messy in boot polish black and sootily mineral shades, it’s about melted liners, cream textures and being punked up in gloss texture for a lived in look. It’s rock, but goddess.”

From Runway to Every Day
Simply trace your lash lines with MAC’s Eye Kohl in Smolder or Fluidline in Blacktrack and smudge out with a Q-tip or fingers. To keep the look fresh, pair with glossy skin and moisturized beige lips.

For a wearable goth lip, top a black lip gloss like Lancome’s Color Fever Gloss in Piha Black over your regular lipstick.

Trend #3: Hydraluminous
The dewy look we see this season is all about “pearl highlights, gloss texture, blank lashes, a thicker groomed brow, a nothing lip”.

From Runway to Every Day
To recreate the fresh dewy skin we see here, James Kaliardos suggests “using a lighter shade of foundation down the center of the face to give the appearance of standing in perfect lighting”.

Highlight the cheekbones, forehead, chin, under the eyes and Cupid’s bow with a dab of MAC’s Strobe Cream or Cream Color Base in Pearl.

Apply a sheer wash of clear gloss or Vaseline over the eyelids for a luminous effect. Check out my Gloss Eye tutorial for more tips on how to nail the look.

Spray your face with a mist of MAC’s Fix + for maximum dewiness.

Trend #4: Revolutionary Nature
Think Gisele Bündche – naturally gorgeous and healthy in earthy colors.

From Runway to Every Day
Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury used a brown creamy shadow under the lower lids to really elongate and sculpt the eyes, pushed mascara into the roots of the lashes for super luscious lashes and blended a cream blush in the center of the cheeks in a downward manner.

For a ‘flush from within’ effect,” Tom Pecheux suggests applying blush and shimmer directly over foundation before powdering the skin.

Wet your brush a little before you apply your powder eyeshadows so they turn into a stain.

Trend #5: Tendertone
How can spring be spring without pastel colors?

From Runway to Every Day
Color your eyes and lips in shades of lilac, pink, peach and blue. The key is to be subtle so start out with a sheer wash of color. Blend well so the color melts into your skin.

I’m obsessed with the dewy look. It’s so gorgeous and effortless, and looks great in Spring and Summer.
