While a smoky eye with nude lip is always a favorite on the red carpet, it was all about the lips at the 2014 Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Institute Gala. And the celebs’ top choice of color? None but red.
Graphic elements have been a popular trend on the runways in the past seasons and at Manish Arora Spring/Summer 2014, makeup artist Kabuki and manicurist Marian Newman working for M·A·C Cosmetics created a “1920’s Josephine Baker meets 1990’s raver” look to go with the bright clothing in the collection.
At Naeem Khan Spring/Summer 2014, the look was inspired by Frida Kahlo and centered around luminous skin with a diffused raspberry stained lip and “tough-girl” braids.
“A beautiful finished skin and a stain on the lips” with slicked back hair dominated the runway at Monique Lhuillier Spring/Summer 2014.
At Nicole Miller Spring/Summer 2014, the inspiration came from the opulence, glamour and beauty of Versailles – the gardens, mirrors, mazes and chandeliers. As a result, makeup artist James Kaliardos working for M·A·C Cosmetics created a bright violet lip while Katie Jane Hughes, butter LONDON Global Colour Ambassador, gave models a glittery ombre nail.
“Effortless” was the idea behind the gorgeous red lip and flushed cheeks that lead makeup artist Hannah Murray, working for NARS Cosmetics, created for the Helmut Lang Spring/Summer 2014 show.
