Lily Lolo Mineral Foundation Review, Swatches and Photos

July 20, 2010

I have always loved the idea behind powder mineral foundations – their ease in application, lightweight formula and natural ingredients, seriously how can you not? But for years, I have had no luck finding the right product. Most brands either left my dehydrated combination skin dry and irritated or turned my face into a glittery disco ball. And just when I was about to give up on the search, I was introduced to London-based Lily Lolo Mineral Foundation and now I am *totally* hooked!

Voted Beauty Editors #1 Pick of ELLE Magazine in 2009, Lily Lolo Mineral Foundation is made with pure inert minerals with main ingredients including Mica (reflects light to blur fine lines), Zinc Oxide (for anti-inflammatory purposes), Titanium Dioxide (acts as a natural sunscreen), Iron Oxides and Ultramarine Blue. It is also free of bismuth oxychloride, talc, preservatives, dyes, parabens and other harmful chemicals so it is suitable for all skin types.

There are 16 shades available to suit pale to tan skin with cool, warm, neutral and olive undertones. I have Warm Honey, a medium yellow-based color and a good match for my NC30 skin.

The foundation had the finest and creamiest texture I have ever seen in a powder. The coverage was also great and very buildable. I usually just dip my brush onto the powder that is stuck on the lid, swirl it around, tap off excess and buff onto the skin. It never looks cakey and all I get is this natural, fresh-faced glow. Plus unlike Bare Escentuals, the light-reflecting particles were really tiny and not over-the-top shimmery so it never emphasizes pores, fine lines or dry patches. I also loved that it did not require a finishing powder yet still managed to wear well without oxidizing.

Thanks Lily Lolo for making a mineral foundation that I love!

I tried mineral foundations but I always had breakouts with them. I’m a little skeptical on mineral foundations right now.

Is this suitable for really oily skin, that is also acne prone?

phyllis, i am a big fan of your blog but lately i’ve only seen you review products that you “absolutely love”. i don’t know if this is just coincidence but it looks really funny…especially when some of the products you like or recommend are given okay or mediocre ratings on other beauty blogs. i hope the free products aren’t convincing you to give a higher rating than you normally would…in any case, i will keep with blog because i trust your opinion.

    Charmaine,

Have you checked the ingredients? Like regular foundations, some mineral foundations contain certain ingredients that can trigger off breakouts.

I learnt this the hard way. Tried a few mineral foundations with bismuth oxychloride and it made my skin itchy and dry. Now I know to stay away from it completely.

    Mandy,

Lily Lolo claims that this foundation is suitable for all skin types. I personally have dehydrated combo skin and it worked for me. I didn’t get shine or breakouts.

    Kelly,

The products I recommend ARE products that I like, regardless of whether I got them for free. I understand the importance of integrity and I have never gotten get paid to write a good review nor have I or will I ever agree to rave about a product just because it was free. If you have been following my blog, you will notice that I write mediocre/negative reviews on products that were sent to me and good reviews on products that I buy myself too.

I just thought it’s better to focus on writing about products that I liked as supposed to spending time ranting about something that did not work for me. After all, everyone wants to know what works, don’t we?

On my disclaimer (http://makeupforlife.net/disclaimer), I also stated that all my reviews are based on my own personal experience so what works for me may or may not work for everyone else. Similarly, just because I don’t like a product does not mean it won’t work on others. Sometimes, finding the right product is about trial and error =)

i would love to try it out! as i heard most mineral foundation coverage is pretty sheer, but i need more coverage for my freckles.

    OMG, want. <3

I haven't really found a mineral foundation that I've liked either, so this review is really exciting for me. I'm dying to try it, but I hate the fact that there's no place to purchase it in-person.

I know you said your shade is suitable for your NC30 skin, but I always forget what I am… I think we're pretty similar, and I wear Punjab in NARS Sheer Glow Foundation — would you say it'd match? I'm pretty good at eyeballing things in person, but you can never tell on a computer. :/

    Angelina,

The Lily Lolo foundation has have great coverage but it will not cover up freckles completely (you can still see mine in the picture).

    Sonia,

I wear Fiji for the NARS Sheer Glow (which is 2 shades lighter than you) but Warm Honey should work on you. Definitely get a sample before you buy the full size!
