Barbie Runway Show at New York Fashion Week Fall 2009
16 February 2009
Barbie finally had her much anticipated runway show at the New York Fashion Week last Saturday! The show consisted of 51 models (including 1 Ken) strutting Barbie’s iconic Past, Present and Future styled designs by 50 top designers and ended with a highly celebratory finale moment with 50 cute little girls in cute little frocks.

Past, Present and Future
The makeup team consisted of 26 beauty pros from Stila and was headed by British makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury. Just like the clothes, there are three different looks – past, present and future. The eyes are the focus in all three looks and all models on the show wore fake lashes.
Past
Barbie of the past was taken from the original 1959 Barbie doll. “The past is a little bit of a 50s cat eye, pillowbox red lip, that late 50s early 60s red lip with silver highlights on the face, a little bit contoured”, said Tilbury.

For this retro look, think bold, glossy red lips, heavy black eyeliner, false lashes and sculpted cheeks.

Present
The present Barbie is simply the uber girly and pretty Barbie that we are all familiar with, like a doll version of Sharon Tate. She has glowy skin, big Bambi eyes with lots of lilacs and light pinks. The look is fresh, super wearable and fun.

Future
For the future, it is all about a “wild and crazy” Barbie so Tilbury created a bright, masquerade look with feathers, gemstones, rhinestones and sequins. Colors like pinks, blues, teals and purples were used around the eyes and to balance things out, the skin is left clean with a soft beigey glossy lip and a contoured cheek.

* Stila Glitter Eye Liner in Purple Silver, Purple Pink and Green Gold

Hair
The luscious Barbie hair was created by a 27-person hair team leaded by Orlando Pita for T3 and a total of 173 hair pieces and extensions were used.

The past Barbie had a classic high ponytail with bangs, the present Barbie had voluminous waves and the future Barbie had a high bun with side bangs and braids. Pita “wanted to make her fun and elegant and not go to much into the draggy thing.”

Past Barbie, Present Barbie and Future Barbie
T3 Dry Conditioner was used to add shine and glossiness and Plump and Control Hairspray was used to obtain volume. Pita also blowdried models’ hair with a new, Barbie edition of T3’s Featherweight Hair Dryer.
The new hair dryer, which is created by Mattel, has pink accents and will be available in September this year.
Nails

All 50 sets of nails were done by Creative Nail Design and a total of 420 red nails and 340 pink nails were used for the show.
The past Barbie was done with a gorgeous red, Wildfire. The present was done with a hot pink color, Hot Pop Pink while the future Barbie wore a custom blend of Negligee and Serenity, layered over each other.

First yay!!
Everything is so pretty!
and the models are gorgeous!
wow.. that’s amazing!!
I don’t like the “future” looks… it’s not very “Barbie” to me. I mean, the make-up looks amazing, but I don’t think it’s very “Barbie”…
I was thinking more of like, Legally Blonde style outfits would be used… I don’t know. Cool show though!
Thanks for putting info about the nails. I’m just getting into fake nails myself, and they look so much better than real ones (way easier, too).
What a show!
Thank you for some additional peeks at Babie’s first runway event. Regards.
