Maybelline Volum’ Express Colossal Mascara Review

August 4, 2008

Just when I thought I have found my latest holy grail mascara, I discovered Maybelline’s newest invention, Volum’ Express Colossal Mascara.

Similar to CoverGirl Lash Blast mascara, the Maybelline Volum’ Express Colossal Mascara comes in an uber bright tube with a gigantic brush. It is available in 2 shades of Black – Classic Black and Glam Black – and contains collagen to plump up lashes for up to 9 times the volume.

The first thing I noticed that was different about this mascara was its scent. Unlike most other mascaras I have used, this actually had a faint rose scent which I personally did not like – I seriously thought I got a bad tube!

The formula itself felt very wet and took a little longer to dry than most mascaras but the results were SPECTACULAR! My Asian lashes looked fuller, darker and simply beautiful!

The mascara also stayed on really well and never smudged or flaked. Plus despite the huge brush, it reached EVERYTHING – including those tiny lower lashes – without clumping or smearing all over the place. I am definitely going to stick with this one for a while.

OMG,I have to laugh at this because the other day I was out buying mascara, and I couldn’t find Rimmel’s Glam’Eyes, so I bought two different types of Mabelline’s Define-a-Lash,and Covergirl’s Lash Blast. I saw the Colossal Volum’ too, and I thought “should I buy it?? errr,.umm,… I’ve already bought $24 worth of mascara, my husband is gonna kill me,.ummm,..no” And I passed it up!!! And now look,..a post on the very mascara that I should I have bought,…*sigh*

/gonna have to sneak out and buy it today 😉

    Dear Phyllis

Another amazing mascara that I would like to recommend you is Shisedo’s Majolica Majorca Lash Extension (the very black tube) mascara. If you can pick it up in the States, you gotta try it because it works amazingly for Asian eyelashes. I wore it for almost 20 hours straight and it did not smudge even a bit and it coated my top lashes so well. On top of that, being Shiseido and cost around 10$ (in Taiwan) is sth amazing 😀

I’d like to try the Maybelline too but I’m skeptical about the brush because your lashes are actually longer than typical Asian lashes.

Keep on bloggin! you’re great (:

wow, your lashes look so good! Did you curl them?

    WOW

How do you apply mascara on the lower lashes? When I do it, it always end up looking sloppy.

I second that comment about Majolica Majorca. I had to pick up several tubes of it in Japan before I came back since they don’t sell it in the states. I also heard from HK friends that it’s not sold in HK either, so getting your hands on it might be a little tough.

Colossal looks great on your lashes! Glad it’s working for you. I have been using this for a few weeks now and I wish it made my lashes pop black against my tannish skin like it did against yours!

    thanks for sharing!

what method do you use to apply mascara on your top and bottom lids in a way so it doesnt get on your actual lids? I always have a problem with that!

You should really try Shiseido Majolica Majorca.
Til now the best for me (Asian Eyes).

your lashes look great! what is the difference between teh colors?

    thanks for the review.

i was using an older mascara (maybelline’s sky high curves) but wasn’t getting the best results.

out of the two you mentioned in this article (the rimmel and maybelline ones), which one would you recommend the most?

    thanks again!

Phyllis, thank you so much for your nice review on this mascara! Hearing so many people not liking this product, I was bummed out because Cover Girl Lash Blast never works for me as CG mascaras sting my eyes so badly. Maybelline is the only brand of mascara my eyes can handle and I’d love to try the Colossal Volum’ Express! Yay.

Everyone’s been giving this a high rating and good reviews, but I’ve been using it and it’s terrible! It’s inky and runny and I just can’t seem to make it work for me.
And I NEVER complain about products but I don’t think I’d ever recommend this to anyone.
But you know, maybe I just got a bum tube of it..

WOW! Your eyelashes look amazing! This really gives me the urge to go out and buy one. I don’t know which to buy now because I was going to go out and get MAC Plush Lash because I wanted to try it but after seeing this review I’m torn between the two.. lol.
Anyways great review! I would love if you could do a review on Plush Lash though! (:

Yeah, Majolica Majorca is my fave too, it lengthens, darkens and is very unlikely to clump. Especially the black enamel version is great, but I think that was a limited edition as i cannot find that one anymore. But all the majolica majorca mascaras are great!

XD the colosal smelled like roses? my brother thought it smelt like beer XD

  • Reply sapphire January 13, 2009 at 12:16 am

I also thought the same thing when i opened it and smelled it! LOL

And also, for those of you having trouble with smudges while putting on mascara, you can take a Q-tip and dip it in some makeup remover or even baby oil/lotion and wipe away the excess that gets on your eyelids.

It makes your eyes look so glamorous!! I’m always looking for a good mascara. I have to use waterproof, cause when I curl my lashes and use regular, it always straightens them. Thanks for sharing!!!

Hi, At least i found this mascara in our local store and immediately bought. I really liked the view of this mascara in ur eyes, very effective and natural at the same time. However on my lashes it looked a bit different (I have longer brown lashes). But i have to notice, the first impression from the brush is that its big, but its VERY comfortable to use and easily correct many times. Also u dont have to do something with brush when u take it (like trying to leave in the bottle rest of mascara), the brush takes normal amount that u need. Eyes look beautiful(every lash is separated). And it really doesnt flake or smudge, i totally agree with ur review Phyllis. Thanks for nice advice!))
