Makeup Tutorial: How To Create Elva Hsiao’s Sexy Smoky Eye Look

February 8, 2011

For years, girls in Asia have looked up to Taiwanese singer Elva Hsiao(蕭亞軒) for her sultry smoky eye makeup. Below is a video tutorial by Elva herself on how to nail a more wearable version of her signature look. The clip is in Chinese but I have transcribed it just for you guys. More after the jump!

Step 1. Start by coloring your eyelid with a shimmery brown cream-based eyeshadow (NYX Cosmetics Jumbo Eye Pencil is great for this!) Blend upwards and towards the nose with your finger.

Step 2. Apply the same shadow on the lower lid, directly on the lash line.

Step 3. Dip an eyeshadow brush into a contouring powder, tap off excess and apply onto the crease. Sweep back and forth to blend. Drag the color towards the nose, blending onto the brow.

Step 4. Apply a darker shade of brown onto the eyelid with a dense eyeshadow brush. Start from the outer corner close to the lash line and blend upwards with a finger or brush.

Step 5. Using your finger, pat a shimmery gold shadow in the center of the eyelid, right above the eyeball.

Step 6. Add a dab of black shadow with gold shimmer onto the outer corner of the eye for more drama. Blend.

Step 7. Pat the same color onto the lower lash line.

Step 8. Line the upper lash line with a black liquid liner. Fleck the line upwards at the outer corner and make sure you line the inner rim as well so there are no white spaces.

Step 9. Layer two different kinds of fake lashes together and apply them along the upper lash line.

Step 10. Reapply liquid liner to better elongate the eyes.

yes please let us know about contour powder! Is this just a skin-tone eyeshadow to create more depth, or is there a particular brand that is known to be good?

You can try MAC Pro Sculpting Powder. They are great for contouring and are always used on the eyes at Fashion Week.

I do not know what brand it is and she did not say either. All you need is a matte powder that’s meant for contouring.

*Sigh* Elva should’ve stayed far, far away from plastic surgery. She was so adorable and beautiful before. Now I can’t even recognize her.

Anyway, I like the way she does her eye makeup. It’s cool to see an actual celebrity do a video tutorial!
