I finally attended the Wella Color Discovery Tour Event at Old Orchard Mall today and had such a blast! Not only did I get a free hair color consultation with one of Chicago’s bests, I sat down with Wella Professionals’ very own hair expert, Nicole, to get the lowdown on how to achieve great hair color.
Since I have not dyed my hair in over a year, the first thing I wanted to know is how to choose the right color. Nicole’s answer? Look at your complexion, natural hair color, eye color and even makeup. As much as you are tempted to go for a drastic change, the most fool-proof way is to stick to a few shades lighter or darker than your natural hair color.
She also pointed out that it is always easier to go dark than light. So what should those with naturally dark hair do if they want lighter hair? Nicole suggested using highlights and lowlights to create dimension and a ribbon effect instead of doing a lighter color all over to get the most natural look.
When I brought up the difference between at-home coloring and getting it done professionally, Nicole supported the latter but she has valid reasons. Since at-home dying kits are meant to cater to all hair types and colors, they do not have the ability to lift your color and correct your undertones. In most cases, you will end up with a color that is too brassy and risk having to pay more to get it fixed at a salon. At-home dying kits also tend to contain ingredients like metallics which are less safe and more damaging to the hair.
I will be getting a taste of the Wella haircoloring experience by Liza from Shear Elegance Salon in 2 weeks. Stay tuned for an update with before-and-after pictures!
Missed today’s event? The folks at Wella will still be around tomorrow (August 1st, 11am to 6pm) at Old Orchard Mall right by Macy’s. Hurry down there to get your free haircolor consultation, 25% off coupon for your next coloring service AND a free Sebastian Volupt Spray!
