How To: Create Wavy Hair With A Curling Iron

December 9, 2006

If you have straight hair and want to create sexy wavy hair a la Ashlee Simpson, all you need is ten minutes and five simple steps.

Step 1. Apply a heat-protection product onto your hair and make sure it is evenly distribute (I like Paul Mitchell Heat Seal).

Step 2. Wrap an one inch section of your hair around a middle sized barrel curling iron. I just got Vidal Sassoon Micro Crystal Curl 25mm Tong and I LOVE that baby! Not only does it heat up within seconds but it also has nine different settings (now this should go under another entry).

Step 3. Hold for a few seconds then release.

Step 4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to the rest of your hair.

Step 5. Once you are done, shake your head to allow curls to fall together. Separate curls with fingers if necessary.

Step 6. Apply soft wax onto the curls sparingly to help maintain their shape.

As for those who do not have naturally straight hair, try John Frieda Beach Blonde Ocean Waves Sea Spray. Basically, it is a mixture of seawater and light conditioning oils designed to give your hair that fresh-from-the-beach look. All you have to do is shake the bottle until well mixed then spray the product all over your head. Next, run your fingers through sections to tousle and create loose, irregular waves.

Thanks for writing this article! I’ve tried to curl my hair a couple of times but it never turns out well. Is there a way to prevent your hair from getting frizzy when you curl it? Also so that the curls don’t all look the same? Thanks!

Rinoa, to prevent frizzies, use a heat-protective product before you curl your hair and finish with a gloss.

If you don’t want the curls to look the same, you have to curl it in a certain way. You can also use your fingers to “mess it up” a little once your hair has cooled off.

Hi! I’ve always had problems reaching the back of my hair when curling. Any tips?

Hey, do you know any type of shampoo that can make your hair grow faster and thicker? I have medium hair and I want it to be long. Do you recommend extensions?

Tashi, try taking Biotin instead – it has been proven to help hair grow faster.

As for extensions, I will only recommend it if you do it once in a while. If you wear extensions all the time, you might end up with bald patches like Britney.

    Hi Phyllis,
I have bought a VS 32mm curling tong but it doenst seem to curl very well.. is it because its too big? or because not hot enough?

The curling tong has 15 heat settings:
    -1-5 (120-130 degrees celcius)
    -6-10 (130-140)
    -11-15 (135-145)

but I only tried 6 cus i’m scared it would burn and break my hair.. should I buy a new 25mm instead?

    Thanks
