Backstage Makeup Breakdown: Topshop Unique Fall 2009 at London Fashion Week

February 25, 2009

Grunge, sci-fi and New Age travelers were the inspirations behind the designs of Jacqui Markham and Karen Bonser at the Topshop Unique Fall 2009 show.

The collection consists of layers of oversized chunky sweaters and scarves in bright colors along with metallic leather tunics, bodysuits and glow-in-the-dark accessories. Kind of hot and definitely not for the shy.

Makeup
Inspired by Iggy Pop, David Bowie and Bow Wow Wow, MAC makeup artist Miranda Joyce created a “rock and roll mixed with punk” look that has “the craziness of disco but with a touch of Camden Town.”

The focus was on the super hot glistening metallic gold lips and to create them, Joyce mixed MAC Pigments in Copper and Rose Gold together with an alcohol base.

As for the eyes, the lower lids were rimmed with MAC Foxy Lady Eye Pencil and the brows brushed through with mascara to give a bold, natural “sporty” look.

The rest of the face was kept clean with only concealer where necessary and a dab of Blushcreme in Posey on the cheeks.

Hair
To go with the bold makeup, hairstylist Samantha Hillerby braided really thick and chunky random cornrows all
over the models’ head. Mousse was added into the hair to create grip and ribbons and neon elastics were used to create a young and fresh look.
