MAC Formal Black Collection Reviews and Photos

November 6, 2006

Just when I am starting to get bored of MAC’s recent collections, they released their annual holiday collection for 2006 – Formal Black. This collection has got to be one of the best holiday collections from MAC. Not only is the packaging totally cute(*love* the lushy fabric and black bead chain!) but all the colors are extremely gorgeous! I was so tempted to get them all but only picked up a few things. More after the jump!

Trust me this picture does not do justice to how *beautiful* the Velvet 6: Smoked Eyes ($36) is! The palette contains six universally flattering shades. Five of them are shimmery:

Vex (soft pale green duochrome with pink opalescent shimmer)
Satin Taupe (taupe brown with silvery bronze shimmer)
Club (muted reddish brown duochrome with green opalescent)
Gentle Fume (dark grey with silver reflects)
Black Tied (midnight black with a silver white sparkle)
– and one is matte – Malt (soft pinkish-beige).

All the colors go every well with one another and they can be used to create a soft or strong smoky eye. Gentle Fume and Club are my favorite colors from this palette and like the eyeshadow palettes from previous holiday collections, this comes with a 213 SE application brush. Please go pick one up if you love smoky eyes!

Suedette: Intense Eyes ($36) is definitely for those who love bright, fun colors. All the colors are shimmery, highly pigmented and great for creating different looks. The colors are:

Phloof! (frosted off white)
With A Twist (bright light green with gold)
Till Daybreak (dirty rosy pink)
Nightbird (rich aqua with green pearl)
Smut (muted black flecked with red shimmer) and
Gallant (deep grape with pearl)

My favorites are Nightbird and Gallant which are both new shades exclusive to this palette. Like the Smoked palette, this also comes with the 213 SE brush.

The Brush Sets ($48) are great if you do not own the full size brushes. They all come in uber cute cases and each set contains a really versatile collection of brushes. For reviews of the individual brushes, please check out the following entries:

Makeup Brushes Reviews Part II – Eyes

One thing to note, however, is that SE brushes will not have the same quality as the full sized ones (hence the price difference). Despite that, I would still recommend getting a set of these for traveling purposes.

Hey there! Love your reviews, wished you would update more. I’m quite a beauty products junkie (can’t afford all of them but I love reading about and looking at them, at least!) myself but I have nobody to share this obsession with! Wanted to get in touch with you but you left no contact details and I don’t AIM. 🙁

Would you contact me first, please? I’m not a psycho, promise! Hehe.

I love the new holiday collection (almost bought the bright eyeshadow collection and peach lips collection while shopping there online) but I spent $90 on all sorts of other stuff. Oh and thanks for the recommendation on M.A.C.’s Select Coverup! Finally a liquid concealer that actually conceals things. It’s amazing the things you do for the world of makeup! Keep up the great work!

Try the felt-tip liquid liner by L’oreal. It is supposed to be just like the one by Lancome which is raved by a lot of people.

I did do a soft smoky eye with the Smoked palette from the Formal Black collection the other day. Try using Vex all over and Club to smoke it out or Satin Taupe with Gentle Fume – the combos are endless!
