MAC Sweetie Cake Collection Reviews

April 14, 2006

This came out in the stores yesterday so I went and checked it out after work. Overall I was a little disappointed but I still managed to pick up the 3 pigments. Below are the reviews:

Pigments ($19.50)

Pinked Mauve
MAC describes this as a “deep violet with gold pearl”. To me it’s like a plummy version of Ruby Red pigment. It is fairly shimmery and even though I have not tried it on my eyes, I am sure it would make a really pretty smoky eye. I will try to do a look with this color over the weekend and post pictures.

Lily White
This is a “light neutral with gold pearl”. It is very frosty and slightly gritty. The color is a little similar to Vanilla except more neutral and it makes a really pretty highlighter. I wore this today under my brow bones and inner corner and it brightened up my eyes a lot.

Apricot Pink
Described as a “mid-tone pink coral”, this is my favorite product from the entire collection. It is very shimmery and the color is nothing like any of the pigments I own – it is indeed a mid-tone pink coral, kind of like a pink version of Goldenaire pigment. Plus the color is very versatile and can be used as an eyeshadow, blush and even lip color. I wore this today on my entire lid and I *loved* it!

Softsparkle Eye Pencil ($13.50)
These come in 5 limited-edition colors:

Reflecto: Mid-tone blue with silver pearl
Nightsky: True black with silver pearl
Ultra-Chill: Pale mint green with silver pearl
Peacocked: Rich turquoise green with silver pearl
Iris Accents: Violet with silver pearl

All the colors are really pretty and my favorite is Ultra-Chill. They go on really smooth but I find the silver glitter a little too gritty which might be irritating to those with sensitive eyes. Plus the color came off right away after I rubbed it once. I ended up passing on these.

Nail Lacquer ($10)
I have always been a sucker for nail polishes with glitter so when I first saw these online, I was really psyched. But when I saw them at the store, I was very disappointed. The colors turned out to be a LOT darker than the pictures – not my cup of tea!

4 Sweetie Cakes Eyeshadow Quad ($35)
This contains 4 new shades:

Almond Icing – grey with pink pearl
Gateaux – pale pink with frost
Sugar Blue – greened teal with pink pearl
Demi-Sweet – plum with blue pearl

They looked really really pretty online but totally blah in person. The colors are way too sheer and muted for my taste. Plus they are pretty similar to some of the existing shades. Almond Icing is like Vex; Gateaux is like Pink Freeze; Sugar Blue is like Aquadisiac; Demi-Sweet is like Nocturnelle. I don’t recommend getting this.

Your blog is VERY helpful. Just purchased Petticoat on eBay and I’ve never tried the shade and was a little worried since I paid a little bit more than I wanted to. But after reading your entry about the Skinfinish line, proved very helpful and answered all my questions. I too, am a NC30.

Also, thanks for the post about the Sweetie Cake collection. I agree that the colors for the quad looks great, but after seeing some photos on another community of those who bought it and reading your review, I think I’ll pass.

Look forward to more of your postings. 🙂

How do you apply the pigments? With a regular eyeshadow brush?

Someone might have asked you this before, but with all the makeup that you have in your collection, do you carry a bag with your essentials with you or do you store all of your cosmetics in a train case or something similar at home? Just curious, because I have a ton (in the bathroom, in a box under my bed, and a few lipglosses and a compact in my purse)!

yup I apply pigments with a regular eyeshadow brush. to make the pigment stick to your skin, you can try wetting the brush first with water or the MAC water-based mixing medium. also, when you apply the pigment, try to pack it onto your skin instead of brushing it on.

I know this has nothing related to this post, but about the earlier post about the book Makeup Makeovers. I went to Borders today and looked at the book. You were totally right. This book is truly amazing. Just reading it for a few minutes gave me so much information. Thank you for recommending this book!

Hi! Absolutely love this blog of yours. For a long period of time, I always thought pigments serves the same purpose as eyeshadow until I read this latest entry of yours. So.. what exactly does MAC pigments do?

Also, like you, I adore smokey eye makeup. However, I only seemed to look better in black or brown eyeshadow and liner. Do you have suggestions for other colours on chinese eyes? I’m getting a lil bored of black and brown.

Thank you so much and I think your blog rox, its definitely a life saver when I’m having a makeup crisis. You really should make this your career and I think you’ll do very well in it. Good luck girl!
