What Is The Correct Order to Put On Makeup?

May 18, 2006

A lot of readers wanted to know the correct order to put on makeup. But if you ask me, I don’t think such a thing exists. Different people have different ways of doing things. It is true that there are certain rules you should stick to but I personally think you should just do whatever works best for you. Here is how I do my makeup everyday in 6 simple steps:

Step 1. Prepping my skin
Wash my face with warm water -> Apply eye cream, moisturizer and sunscreen

Step 2. Base
Apply primer (if necessary) -> Apply concealer under the eyes, around the nose or any areas that needs coverage -> Apply a thin layer of powder all over to set the makeup

Step 3. Eyes
Fill in eyebrows -> Prep my eyelid with a primer (if necessary) -> Apply eyeshadow and blend -> Line my upper eyelid -> Curl lashes -> Apply mascara -> Comb through lashes to make sure there are no clumps -> Curl lashes again

Step 4: Cheeks
Apply blush onto apples/cheekbones -> Highlight the bridge of my nose

Step 5. Lips
Apply lip balm -> Top with lipstick/lip gloss

Step 6. Check everything
Check under natural sunlight to make sure everything is well-blended -> Set with a finishing spray or rosewater

* When doing dark eye makeup, I like to do my eyes before the rest of my face. This way, you can easily clean up any eyeshadow fallout without having to redo the foundation/concealer/powder.

cool, my routine is almost the same! 🙂

except, when i curl my lashes after mascara, my eyelashes clump and dont’ curl, just stick up like “L” does that make sense? so ijust curl before but i wish i would curl after, any suggestions?

It will make your skin look dewy and take away the cakiness. It can also help to set your makeup. Besides water, you can use MAC Fix or rosewater extract. Just make sure you spray your face from a distance and don’t spray too much all at once.

hey Jacqueline, you might want to try not pressing so hard when you curl your lashes. Also, you should start at the base then curl again on the tip.

Using a finishing spray or even water can help tone down cakiness and give your face a dewy look.
