Halloween Hair Ideas: Ethereal Fairy Braids from Vivienne Westwood Gold Label S/S 2012

The perfect Halloween getup requires the right hair and makeup. If you are dressing up as a fairy or mystical creature this Halloween, try this gorgeous “mystically ethereal” hairstyle created by Pantene Global Stylist Ambassador, Sam McKnight, for the Vivienne Westwood’s S/S 2012 Gold Label show!

Step 1. Start with freshly washed and conditioned hair, using Pantene Pro-V Medium-Thick Hair Solutions Breakage to Strength Shampoo and Conditioner to create the perfect base.

Step 2. Next give your hair a boost by applying the Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Style Triple Action Volume Mousse throughout. Then blow-dry smooth using a flat bristle brush, concentrating on smoothing the length of the hair with the brush for a soft result.

Step 3. Once completely dry, create a full circle parting round the circumference of the hair line (just a couple of inches in) and let the loose hair fall down and create a ‘veil’ around the hair line.

Step 4.Create 2-3 diagonal partings at random, and secure each section of hair in to a ponytail and secure with a snag-free elastic.

Step 5.Next braid each pony tail and secure at the end. Loosen the braid a little by pulling it slightly apart with your fingers.

Step 6. Loop each braid back on itself and secure against the original ponytail – use hair clips to hold in place if needed.

Step 7. Apply Pantene Pro-V Restore Beautiful Lengths Smoothing Balm to the ends to smooth away any frizz.

Step 8. Finish the style with a generous spray of Pantene Classic Care Hairspray to keep the look in place.

Runway Beauty: Haider Ackermann S/S 2012 Hair and Makeup

At the Haider Ackermann Spring/Summer 2012 show in Paris, makeup artist Stephane Marais used MAC Cosmetics to create glossy, “poetic”, taupe eyes while Eugene Souleiman from Wella Professionals gave models “rebellious” hair.

Makeup

Face
• Face & Body Foundation – lightly applied over hydrated skin to even skintone and perfect.
• MAC Pro Tint Cream Colour Base – blended under cheekbones to sculpt.

Eyes
• Coffee Eye Pencil – applied through both the upper and lower lashline to make lashes appear thicker at their root.
• MAC Pro Concrete and Shale Eye Shadow (taupe-toned eyes) – mixed together to create a customized taupe for eyes, blended around the eyes to emphasize the crease and lower lashline.
• Mulch Eye Shadow (sepia-toned eyes) – layered and blended over coffee pencil to create sepia-toned eyes, emphasizing the crease and lower lashline.
• MAC Pro Medium Blot Powder/Loose – applied under eyebrows and eyes for a matte effect.
• MAC Pro Shine Mixing Medium – applied over eyelids for a shiny, glossy finish to eyes.

Lips
• Lip Conditioner SPF 15 – hydrates and perfects lips with a natural finish.

Hair
“This is a chic, dishevelled, boyish look. I was thinking about the style of a young aristocratic boy who parties a little too hard, and wanted to transfer this look to a beautiful young woman to create a slightly androgynous hairstyle. The key to this style is an illusion of short hair, with a textured ‘foppish’ top. I love the idea of imperfection and wanted the hair to look as if the girl had been partying all night and the roots of her hair were a little unwashed and sweaty, in contrast to the perfectly sleek underneath section. This hair look is all about looking cool with an attitude, it’s tough, contemporary and full of character; rather like the Haider Ackermann woman”, says Eugene.

Step 1. This look is focused on creating a ‘day old’ hair but with a freshly washed base, so always start with freshly washed and conditioned hair. Use Wella Professionals Enrich Shampoo and Conditioner.

Step 2. Roughly dry the hair, keeping it as flat as possible, if hair is very textured, use Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier as a base styling product to smooth out the hair surface and act a as primer for the subsequent styling products.

Step 3. To create the illusion of short hair, you first need to take the underneath hair away, to create a flat and shiny base. Clip the top section of hair out of the way, and start to make a very flat chignon, taking the hair section by section and spraying the roots with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray until they are saturated. Brush this through the hair with a small soft bristle brush; hold the section tight as you go to create tension. Repeat this process, ensuring that each section is sprayed wet as you go (once the hair spray dries it will slightly ‘shrink’ which helps to pull the hair even tighter).

Step 4. When you have all the hair contained in one section, create a chignon by squashing the hair and rolling it back on itself and then pinning the hair into place, but ensure that the top ‘tail’ of the chignon remains free as this will form part of the top look. The chignon must be as flat to the head as possible.

Step 5. Release the top section of hair and tease towards the front of the head, clipping into place as you go. Spray Wella Professionals Create Character Texturizing Spray in to the roots and rub it` in with finger tips to loosen the hairstyle and to create a different texture.

Step 6.Fold the front piece of hair back on itself and pin down roughly, spritz liberally with Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray to create a slightly rougher texture to the hair and give it some ‘bite’.

Step 7.Using a hairdryer with a diffuser attachment, apply heat lightly over the entire head to set the style in place.

Step 8.Finally, pick out end sections from the top and use straightening irons to clamp the ends to create separation and give a ‘piecey’ finish.

At the Jeremy Scott Spring/Summer 2012 show, Global Creative Director of Wella Professionals, Eugene Souleiman, worked with MAC Cosmetics makeup artist Val Garland to create a “country Barbie” look.

Makeup

Face
• Charged Water Face & Body Lotion (available Spring/Summer 2012) – hydrates and perfects skin.
• Face & Body Foundation – applied lightly to even skintone.
• Studio Finish Concealer – applied as needed to perfect.
• Mineralize Skinfinish Natural Foundation – blended over “hot spots” through the middle of the face.
• Preferred Pink and Fully Ripe Lip Quad Palette (available Spring/Summer 2012) – blended on the cheeks for a doll-like shape.
• Immortal Flower Powder Blush (available Spring/Summer 2012) – dusted over the cheeks to set.
• Cork and Burgundy Lip Pencils and Coffee Eye Pencil – applied to the cheeks to create freckles, alternating tones to give depth and dimension.

Eyes
• MAC Pro Black Crème Liner – applied on the upper eyelid with a slightly winged tip, thicker in the center, and very tight to the inner corner of the eye. Additionally applied straight across the lower eyelid, leaving a space between the lower lashes and line.
• Coffee Eye Pencil – applied with 266 Small Angle Brush through the socket and blended with 219 Pencil Brush.
• Dazzlelight Eye Shadow – applied with intensity through the inner corner to highlight with 219 Pencil Brush.
• 43 Lash – applied over the upper lashes.
• Zoomblack Mascara – blended through the upper lashes and 43 Lash.
• Haute & Naughtly Black Mascara – applied to the lower lashes, powdered with translucent powder, then re-applied once again for a “Dusty Springfield” effect.

Lips
• In Synch Lip Pencil – blended over the entire lip.
• Enchantee Kissable Lip Colour (available Spring/Summer 2012) – applied over the lip to finish.

Hair
“I wanted to have fun with the hair and create caricatures as an extension of the girls’ personalities. The collection had a ‘Wild West’ theme featuring cactus and pony-skin prints, but in true Jeremy Scott style, he used lots of bright color and brought a sense of fun and energy to the clothes, and I wanted to do the same with the hair. So we started with a very fresh and pretty, cowgirl look with pigtails in ringlets, but then created a ‘50s style ultra high glamorous bouffant wave on the top of the head. The contrast of the young pigtails against the sophisticated top section created a sense of drama and surprise” says Eugene.

Step 1. Start with freshly washed and conditioned hair using Wella Professionals Enrich Shampoo and Conditioner.

Step 2. Prep wet hair with Perfect Setting Blow-Dry Lotion, and blow dry to create a smooth texture to the hair.

Step 3. Tong the hair using a wide barrelled hair tong and clip each curl and leave to set.

Step 4. Once the hair has cooled, keep the top section (about 6 curls) pinned on top of the head, and create two sections (parted at the back of the head) in the bottom section.

Step 5. Take each section at a time and gently back comb right at the roots to create a little volume, then fasten in to a low pony tail with elastic and twist the curl into a defined ringlet.

Step 6. Spray with Wella Professionals Super Set Finishing Spray to keep the ringlet in place.

Step 7. Release the top section and back comb each piece to half the length of the hair using as fine toothed comb, the hair should stand up on its own and provide a structure for the ‘bouffant’.

Step 8. Smooth the hair in to once section using a soft bristle brushed, sprayed with Wella Professionals Super Set Finishing Spray, and twist in to a high side flip.

Step 9. Spay with Wella Professionals Super Set Finishing Spray to hold the style.

Runway Beauty: Missoni S/S 2012 Hair and Makeup at Milan Fashion Week

Inspired by the Spanish Harlem look of the Missoni Spring/Summer 2012 collection, makeup artist Lucia Pieroni working for MAC Cosmetics gave models “sexy, sweaty flamenco skin with a focus on brows” while Wella Professionals‘ Global Creative Director, Eugene Souleiman, created a disheveled bun with a side-part.

Face
• Face & Body Foundation – lightly applied to perfect skin.
• Fusion Gold Metal X Cream Shadow (available Spring/Summer 2012) – blended over upper cheekbones, bridge of nose and chin to mimic hot, sweaty skin.
• Groundwork Paint Pot – blended under the apples of cheeks with 188 Small Duo Fibre Face Brush.
• Fix + – misted onto sides of the face at line up.

Eyes
• Groundwork Paint Pot – blended around the entire eye for a shadowed effect.
• Coffee Eye Pencil – applied through the waterline for depth.
• Coquette and Copperplate Eye Shadow – used with 239 Eye Shader Brush to create full brows.

Lip
• Freckletone and Fresh Brew Lipstick – pressed into the lips with fingers.

Hair
“I wanted to create tension between the hair and the clothing, to inject it with a rawness that would capture the passion and sensuality of a beautiful young Missoni woman at the end of a hot summer night. So I took the idea of a traditional, slick Spanish look with a perfect side-parting and hair smoothed back over the ears and sculpted into a neat bun, and deconstructed it to create a “roughed up”, disheveled effect and a slightly dirtier end-of-the-night texture.” said Eugene.

Step 1. Start with freshly washed and conditioned hair using Wella Professionals Enrich Shampoo and Conditioner, and apply Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier to wet hair before blow drying hair straight and smooth using a round brush, without creating volume. For hair in need of an extra moisturizing boost, like that of models at Fashion Week, try using Wella Professionals Enrich Moisturizing Treatment once a week.

Step 2. Rub Wella Professionals Rugged Fix Matte Molding Crème between your palms and fingers and squash into the roots of your hair all over to create a slightly matted textured effect.

Step 3. Next, apply Wella Professionals Flowing Form Smoothing Balm to set the natural movement and texture, blasting the roots with a hairdryer to help absorb the product making it invisible.

Step 4. Although the end look is slightly disheveled it’s important to start with a neat side-parting, so use a sectioning comb to create this before using your hands to pull the hair back roughly into a ponytail at the nape of the neck, covering the ears. Don’t worry if the hair is not perfectly smooth as the beauty of this look is in the imperfection. In fact, if you massage the hair with your fingers to create more volume and texture, this will add to the overall look.

Runway Beauty: Bibhu Mohapatra S/S 2012 Hair and Makeup

Inspired by the women in fashion photographer Helmut Newton’s iconic photographs, Maybelline New York Global Makeup Artist Charlotte Willer worked with lead hair stylist Rutger for Cutler/Redken Salon to create a natural look withe neutral eyes and a ballerina bun.

Makeup
Fit Me! Foundation was used to prep the skin before Medium Bronze was applied onto cheekbones with a dusting of Fit Me! Powder over the skin to eliminate shine.

Using the deepest brown shades of Eye Studio Color Explosion Luminizing Eyeshadow in Caffeine Rush, Charlotte created a smoky eye by blending the shadows over the lid and out past the outer corner of the eyes. Next, she lifted and winged lashes out with Volum’ Express Falsies Flared Mascara in Very Black and filled in brows with Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil.

To create a toned down version of Helmut Newton’s signature red lip, Charlotte used Shine Sensational Lip Gloss in Cherry Kiss.

Hair
To complement the gorgeous makeup, Rutger “went with a strong, graphic, yet simple, ballerina hair style”.

Step 1. Apply Redken Rootful to the roots and length of dry hair and finger dry hair with a T3 Featherweight Luxe hair dryer.

Step 2. When hair is completely dry, brush through with a Mason Pearson to even out the hair and smoothness.

Step 3. Then create a ponytail in the center of the back of the head, using your fingers to create a realness and separation to it, and tie off with an elastic.

Step 4. Backcomb/tease the length of the ponytail to get a bit of a lighter texture and grip.

Step 5. Twist hair around the ponytail in a nice beautiful bun and pin with French “U” pins.

Step 6. Finished the look off with Redken Quick Dry Spray.
