Japanese Subculture: Himegyaru

Just as promised, here is the 411 on Himegyaru (姫ギャル), a part of the Gyaru subculture that originated in Japan.

Hime basically means “princess” in Japanese and their biggest difference between Himegyarus and other Gyarus is their princessy manner, which is manifested through their clothes, hair, jewelry, accessories etc.

Hair
Like most Gyarus, Himegyarus have super big, curly hair that range from light blonde to light brown. To get that beehive look, tease your hair with a rat tail comb, mist it with hair spray and pin it up with bobby bins. Use an one inch barrel curling iron on the bottom for the curls.

Makeup
As for the makeup, you will need:

* Flawless porcelain skin. You will hardly see a tan Himegyaru so ditch the self-tanner, stay away from the sun and use sunscreen every day.

* Dramatic eyeliner. The eyes are always lined heavily in black on both top and bottom. MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack is perfect for this.

* Brown eyeshadow on the eyelid and under the eye to add in depth.

* Long, thick eyelashes. Use fake lashes if necessary.

* Baby pink/peach blush applied on the apples. How can you be a princess without those doll-looking cheeks?

* Pink glossy lips.

Clothes and Accessories
Lots and lots of pink, ribbons, pearls, laces, flowers, bling bling and heels are pretty much the basics. Nails must also be perfectly done.

I have always wanted to try out the Gyaru look and after going to the Acen, I decided to do a Casual Himegyaru-inspired FOTD.

What I Used

*Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation in #120 Soft Sand buffed in with Cat Cosmetics Kabuki Brush
* Anastasia Highlighting Brow Kit to fill in eyebrows
* MAC Mega Rich Pigment on entire eyelid
* NARS Surabaya II Eyeshadow very lightly on crease
* NARS Himalayas Eyeshadow to highlight brow bone
* MAC Blacktrack Fluidline to line the top and bottom
* Taiwanese False Lashes on top and bottom
* MAC Accentuate Shaping Powder along the bridge of the nose
* MAC Mineralize Blush Duo in Love Rock on cheekbones
* MAC Cremesheen Glass in Partial To Pink on lips

Hair
Since I have not dyed my hair in over 6 months and I normally wear it straight, I just curled the ends a bit with a 2-inch barrel curling iron.

Japanese Subculture: How To Do Oneegyaru Makeup and Hair

Remember the Gyaru gals with bleached hair, uber tan skin, white makeup and crazy outfits that swamped the streets of Shibuya in the late 90s? With time, this culture has evolved into many different subcultures. Today, let’s look at one of them – Oneegyaru.

According to ricoche.net, Oneegyaru gals are typically in their early to mid twenties and they are a more sophisticated version of the original Gyaru. Oneegyaru gals still tan and bleach their hair but the crazy panda eye makeup is ditched for an understated look. They also like to wear higher end labels like Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel.

An Oneegyaru celebrity icon is Koda Kumi. Oneegyaru gals can also be seen all over the sticker picture machines.

Hair
When it comes to the hair, it is all about the color and volume. The hair is bleached to a very light brown or even blonde, known as chappatsu. To style, use rollers on the top part of your hair then curl the bottom with a curling iron.

Makeup
The eyes are the main focus. Here are a few steps you must follow if you want to become a true Oneegyaru gal.

Step 1. The secret to Oneegyaru gals’ supa dupa big eyes? Circle contact lenses – no surprises there. Please use with caution though since they can be bad for your eyes and will cause blindness if used improperly.

Step 2. Eyelid Glue/tape. This step is for those who do not have a crease. I highly recommend Koji’s Eye Talk. Check this out to find out more about the eyelid tape.

Step 3. Lighten your eyebrows with a tinted eyebrow gel or a bronze eyeshadow to match your hair color. Try T’estimo’s eyebrow mascara or Jane’s Magical Mushroom eyeshadow.

Step 4. Apply a shimmery beige eyeshadow as a wash.

Step 5. Sweep a bronze eyeshadow like MAC Mulch on your eyelid. Deposit more color on the crease and extend it just a little past the outer corner of your eyes.

Step 6. Using a black powder eyeshadow or pencil eyeliner, draw a thick line along both the upper and lower lash lines. Next go over the line with a matching liquid eyeliner. Remember to line the inside of your eyes as well.

Step 7. Who can fake those batty lashes without using falsies? Apply falsies on both the top and bottom. Check out brands like Ardell, MAC and Maggie May.

Step 8. Highlight the inner corner of your eyes and brow bone with a shimmery white/beige eyeshadow like MAC Vanilla pigment.

Step 9. Keep the rest of your face understated by evening out your skin with a tinted moisturizer and covering up any flaws with a concealer.

Step 10. Sweep a shimmery powder along your nose and apply a shimmery apricot blush.

Step 11. Pucker up with a nude or frosty pink lipstick like MAC Myth or Out To Shock and top with gloss.

Nails
When it comes to nails, it is all about being long, fake and decorated with lots and lots of bling.
