2011 Holiday Makeup Looks By Celebrity Makeup Artist Gina Brooke

This year, Hourglass Cosmetics Artistic Director Gina Brooke brings us yet another set of gorgeous, easy-to-do holiday makeup looks. The first consists of glittering green eyes with shimmering cheeks and pearlescent lips while the second pairs inky black eyes with stunning purple lips for more drama.

Look #1: Ethereal Beauty

“A vibrant olive shadow really pops – especially if you foil the color,” says Brooke, who suggests using Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Dune. Using a shadow brush, apply the champagne shade first. Use your finger to blend for a graduation of color. Then apply the green shimmer shade. To heighten the impact of the shade, wet your brush before application but make sure to let the shadow dry before moving on to another shade. Pair your statement eyes with Illume Crème-to-Powder Bronzer Duo in Bronze Light applied to the cheeks. Focus on the highlighter shade in the duo. Finish up with Extreme Sheen Lip Gloss in Fortune.

Look #2: Super Vamp

Turn heads with this directional look expressly designed for evening glamour. First, apply the cream shimmer shade of Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Suede over the entire eyelid. Then, line the eyes with Calligraphy Liquid Eye Liner in Ebony and apply Film Noir Full Spectrum Mascara to lashes. Follow with Film Noir Lash Lacquer on the top and bottom to add shine, volume and drama. The final stroke? “I like to use Lash Lacquer as an eyeliner to create an extremely glossy line above the eyes,” says Brooke. “Just retrace your existing line with Lash Lacquer’s brush applicator.” Balance the glossy eye statement with matte plum lips by applying Aura Sheer Lip Stain in Scarlet.

Extra Tip: “The holidays are the perfect time to explore a more refined and layered look,” says Brooke. “I always prime first with Veil Mineral Primer and follow with Illusion Tinted Moisturizer for a glowing complexion. They’re the fundamental steps for looking elegant.”

Runway Beauty: Haider Ackermann S/S 2012 Hair and Makeup

At the Haider Ackermann Spring/Summer 2012 show in Paris, makeup artist Stephane Marais used MAC Cosmetics to create glossy, “poetic”, taupe eyes while Eugene Souleiman from Wella Professionals gave models “rebellious” hair.

Makeup

Face
• Face & Body Foundation – lightly applied over hydrated skin to even skintone and perfect.
• MAC Pro Tint Cream Colour Base – blended under cheekbones to sculpt.

Eyes
• Coffee Eye Pencil – applied through both the upper and lower lashline to make lashes appear thicker at their root.
• MAC Pro Concrete and Shale Eye Shadow (taupe-toned eyes) – mixed together to create a customized taupe for eyes, blended around the eyes to emphasize the crease and lower lashline.
• Mulch Eye Shadow (sepia-toned eyes) – layered and blended over coffee pencil to create sepia-toned eyes, emphasizing the crease and lower lashline.
• MAC Pro Medium Blot Powder/Loose – applied under eyebrows and eyes for a matte effect.
• MAC Pro Shine Mixing Medium – applied over eyelids for a shiny, glossy finish to eyes.

Lips
• Lip Conditioner SPF 15 – hydrates and perfects lips with a natural finish.

Hair
“This is a chic, dishevelled, boyish look. I was thinking about the style of a young aristocratic boy who parties a little too hard, and wanted to transfer this look to a beautiful young woman to create a slightly androgynous hairstyle. The key to this style is an illusion of short hair, with a textured ‘foppish’ top. I love the idea of imperfection and wanted the hair to look as if the girl had been partying all night and the roots of her hair were a little unwashed and sweaty, in contrast to the perfectly sleek underneath section. This hair look is all about looking cool with an attitude, it’s tough, contemporary and full of character; rather like the Haider Ackermann woman”, says Eugene.

Step 1. This look is focused on creating a ‘day old’ hair but with a freshly washed base, so always start with freshly washed and conditioned hair. Use Wella Professionals Enrich Shampoo and Conditioner.

Step 2. Roughly dry the hair, keeping it as flat as possible, if hair is very textured, use Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier as a base styling product to smooth out the hair surface and act a as primer for the subsequent styling products.

Step 3. To create the illusion of short hair, you first need to take the underneath hair away, to create a flat and shiny base. Clip the top section of hair out of the way, and start to make a very flat chignon, taking the hair section by section and spraying the roots with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray until they are saturated. Brush this through the hair with a small soft bristle brush; hold the section tight as you go to create tension. Repeat this process, ensuring that each section is sprayed wet as you go (once the hair spray dries it will slightly ‘shrink’ which helps to pull the hair even tighter).

Step 4. When you have all the hair contained in one section, create a chignon by squashing the hair and rolling it back on itself and then pinning the hair into place, but ensure that the top ‘tail’ of the chignon remains free as this will form part of the top look. The chignon must be as flat to the head as possible.

Step 5. Release the top section of hair and tease towards the front of the head, clipping into place as you go. Spray Wella Professionals Create Character Texturizing Spray in to the roots and rub it` in with finger tips to loosen the hairstyle and to create a different texture.

Step 6.Fold the front piece of hair back on itself and pin down roughly, spritz liberally with Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray to create a slightly rougher texture to the hair and give it some ‘bite’.

Step 7.Using a hairdryer with a diffuser attachment, apply heat lightly over the entire head to set the style in place.

Step 8.Finally, pick out end sections from the top and use straightening irons to clamp the ends to create separation and give a ‘piecey’ finish.

Working for MAC Cosmetics, makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury created two rock-inspired smudgy glittery eye looks and a natural hippy look for the DSquared2 Spring/Summer 2012 show at Milan. Which one is your favorite?

Look #1: Glam Rock

Face
• C5 Face & Body Foundation – applied with fingers to warm up skin.

Runway Beauty: Victoria Beckham S/S 2012 Hair and Makeup

To complement the modern, chic Victoria Beckham’s Spring 2012 collection, makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury used Lancome products to give models a “handsome” and “sporty” look while Redken Creative Consultant Guido created a unique pulled-back hairstyle that was sleek and sophisticated in the front yet girly in the back.

Face
Charlotte started by creating fresh, glowing skin with Teint Miracle Foundation. She shaded and highlighted the face with Star Bronzer Matte and Éclat Miracle Illuminator and applied Translucence pressed powder to the T-zone.

Eyes
For the eyes, Liner Design in Bronze Couture (available April 2012) was mixed with Absolue Bx moisturizer and applied to the crease and then topped with Juicy Tubes in Pure for a glossy finish. Eyebrows were groomed and slightly arched with Le Crayon Poudre brow pencil to give the look a feminine edge.

Lips
To mute the lips, Charlotte applied Effacernes Concealer on them.

Hair
“I needed to break the clean, sleek lines in the front to modernize the look, so I created a rough matte texture in the back. The key is to make it look effortless, which I did by using two distinct textures in one look. Some find it difficult to wear their face so exposed, but the boldness and austerity of the forehead in this look is what makes it beautiful,” said Guido.

Starting with dry hair, Guido combed back a 4-5 inch top section from the forehead to the crown and applied a generous amount of Hardwear 16 Super Strength Sculpting Gel into the whole section before clipping the end of the section up out of the way. Then, he applied Guts 10 Root Targeted Volume Spray Foam through the remainder of the hair until evenly distributed and damp with the product. Next, he clipped the front section at the crown back with a metal bar clip and coated the top section with Glass 01 Smoothing Serum for a lacquered finish. Finally, he let the hair air dry or rough dry with a blow dryer and then added Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray for texture, concentrating on the sides so that no stray hairs are around the face.

Runway Beauty: Wes Gordon S/S 2012 Makeup and Nails

Spring makeup is always fresh and dewy and it is no different at the Wes Gordon Spring 2012 show.

“Fresh, young and elegant” were the three words Maybelline New York Global Makeup Artist Charlotte Willer had in mind. “The skin is dewy, the brow is strong and the lip pops with a sheer wash of color.”

Face
Fit Me! Foundation was used to create perfect, dewy skin before Fit Me! Blush in Medium Coral was added onto the apples of the cheeks for a youthful glow.

Eyes
For the strong brow, Charlotte used Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil that is a shade or two darker than models’ natural brow. She also added Baby Lips Lip Balm in Quenched onto the eyelids to enhance the overall dewy effect.

Lips
Color Sensational Lipcolor in Very Cherry was dabbed in the center of the lips with fingertips to create a stained effect and a pouty pop of color.

Nails
To embody the height of ’60s SoHo sophistication, Kristina Estabrooks from CND crafted soft almond, nearly neon, coral “Power Nails” with two coats of CND Colour in Poppyfield and kept the toes clean and neutral with CND Colour in Desert Suede.
