D-Up Wonder Eyelid Tape Extra Review and Before-and-After Photos

My search for an eyelid tape that works on my natural creases has finally ended with D-Up Wonder Eyelid Tape Extra!

D-Up Wonder Eyelid Tape in Extra
The tape comes in two types, Extra, the one I am reviewing, and Mild. Both are made out of the same material, the only difference is that Extra is slightly “harder” to create a more defined line.

The pack contains 120 pieces of pre-cut double-sided tape, a v-shaped applicator and an instruction booklet. The instructions are in Japanese but as you can see below, the pictures are very helpful and easy to understand.

How To Apply D-Up Wonder Eyelid Tape

The tape itself is very thin and measures 0.09mm thick and roughly 2.4cm long. It fits my eye perfectly without sticking out and no trimming/cutting is required at all. It is also transparent, non-reflective and unlike the pre-cut eyelid tapes or medical tape, it feels a lot smoother and does not have any ridges. I find it much more comfortable to wear and when applied right, it feels like nothing at all.

Application is fast and easy (it takes me ~1 minute to do both eyes) and it doesn’t take long to get the hang of it either. While the instructions specify to use the tape on clean skin, I would recommend applying it after your eyeshadow if you plan on wearing any. I find that if I apply a lot of powder eyeshadow over the tape, it can come off easier.

The results are handsdown the most natural I have ever seen! You cannot tell the tape is on at all unless you look down or close your eyes (which is an inevitable downside of using eyelid tapes). Plus the tape really helps define my natural crease, making me look less tired.

Another thing I like is how well the tape stays on. I can wear it for 10 hours straight and it will not peel, shift or irritate my skin. Removing the tape is pretty painless as well. All you need to do is soak a cotton pad with makeup remover and leave on your eyelids for 15 to 30 seconds and the tape will come off easily.

My only gripe is the price and availability. Compared to traditional pre-cut eyelid tapes or medical tapes, this goes for $18 to $20 on most websites, which can be twice as much.

Nonetheless, D-Up Wonder Eyelid Tape is a great product and I highly recommend it for single eyelids, uneven or multiple creases.

Eyelid Tape Spotted on Celebrities!

Thanks to my parents, I was born with natural creases on both eyes. But after years of wearing contacts and eye makeup along with long hours of working on the computer and the inevitable aging process, my eyelids have become droopy over the years. When my eyes get tired, my natural creases sometimes go from a prominent line to a few folds – so not cool >.< !

To combat the problem, I started my search for the right eyelid tape. While researching, I found out that TONS of celebrities use eyelid tapes to enhance their beauty – even those who were born with natural creases! Here are a few:

Actress Fan Bing Bing (范冰冰) use eyelid tape to make her natural creases deeper and more even.

Singer Ava Yu (羽翹) has openly admitted to using eyelid tape. She is a fan of D-Up Wonder Eyelid Tape (review and before-and-after pictures here) which I will be reviewing shortly.

Singer Elva Hsiao (蕭亞軒) is handsdown the one with the most dramatic before-and-after results. Born with a tiny crease, she has completely transformed her look over the years using eyelid tape, fake lashes and makeup. She ended up getting eyelid surgery in 2009.

What Is Eyelid Tape and How To Use It

Eyelid tape is definitely one of the most popular Asian beauty gadgets and have long been a holy grail for many girls. They are basically clear medical tapes used to create a “double eyelid” and to make your eyes appear rounder and larger.

Just check out the before and after pictures of Hong Kong singer Elanne Kwong below. Her “big eyes” are achieved through the use of eyelid tape and circle lens.

Who Can Use Eyelid Tape

* Those with a small crease
* Those with a crease
* Those with droopy eyelids
* Those with uneven creases

* Unlike you are using a double-sided tape (see below for more info), those completely without a crease are better off using eyelid glue. If you use one-sided tape, it is bound to show.

Currently, there are two kinds of eyelid tape on the market:

* Ones that come in a roll like the 3m Nexcare Blenderm Eye Beauty Tape below
* Ones that are pre-cut to match your upper eyelid. You still have to trim them a little to fit your eye.
* Double-sided fiber sticks and tape

How To Use Eyelid Tape
1. Make sure your eye area is clean and makeup-free. If you want to wear eye makeup, do so after you put on the tape.

2. Based on the curve and length of your shape, cut out a thin strip. Make sure the tape is slightly shorter than the length of your eye so it does not stick out on both ends.

3. Look into the mirror and figure out where your natural crease is.

4. Close your eyes and apply the tape.

5. Open your eyes and blink a few times. If you do not see the tape, good job you did it!

Now here comes the question everyone is dying to ask – can I still wear eye makeup with eyelid tape on? Of course you can! In fact, I highly suggest that you do to help cover up the tape. Below are a few tips that would help:

1) Eyeliner along your upper lashline is a must. It will help hide the tape and make your eyes look bigger.

2) If you are worried about the tape showing or have trouble hiding it, try to focus more on your lashes by wearing falsies.

3) When choosing the tape, pick one that is non-reflective, transparent and smooth. That way, your eye makeup will go on a lot easier too.

Possible Cons of Using the Eyelid Tape:
* Saggy skin. Constant peeling of the tape from your eyelid and improper usage can result in sagginess.

* Irritation and skin allergies. If you have sensitive skin, the tape may cause irritation.

* Time-consuming. Taiwanese singer Elva Hsiao is reported to spend two hours every day just on doing her eye makeup (poor girl!)

* Slight discomfort. Some people may experience slight discomfort when wearing the tape but it is something that you can get used to.

This is one of the more popular eyelid tapes in Hong Kong. It comes in a roll so you would have to trim it yourself. It is also transparent, non-reflective, waterproof, breathable, easy-to-remove and hypoallergenic. Plus it does not leave behind any adhesive residue and is widely available in Asia. This is my personal favorite. It is transparent, non-reflective, waterproof, breathable, easy-to-remove and hypoallergenic as well. How To: Make Single Eyelids/Eyes Without A Crease Look Bigger

A lot of you wanted to know if there are ways to make eyes with monolids, i.e. no crease, bigger. So here are a few ways that I know of. Feel free to leave a comment if you can offer more tips =)

1. Makeup
I strongly believe in using the right makeup to enhance what you are born with. A really good example to show this is Taiwanese singer Elva Xiao (蕭亞軒). Below is a picture of Elva when she first started out and a recent picture of her. As you can see, makeup can make a *huge* difference in altering the size of your eyes.

So how exactly can you make your eyes look bigger by using makeup? Follow the tips below and you should see a difference.

* Keep your eyebrows in check to maximize the eye area. Dark, bushy eyebrows are too empowering and will only make your eyes even smaller. You can also try using bleaching your eyebrows a little or using a lighter brow gel.

* Use eyeshadow on both your eyelid and under the eye. Blend shadow on the upper lid from the center outwards, curving it upwards towards the brow in the shape of a wing.

* When you line your bottom lash line with a dark color, try to line the part where your lashes start and not the inner rim. Lining the inner rim can make your eyes smaller.

* Increasing the white area in your eyes will also make your eyes appear bigger. You can do this by lining the inner rim of your bottom lashes with a white eye pencil.

* Find a pair of fake eyelashes that is right for your eye shape and make it your bff. False lashes can instantly make your eyes look 100 times bigger. It has been reported that Elva spends an hour putting on four layers of falsies every day! But one hour + 4 layers of lashes is a little too much for ordinary people like us. Hit up your nearest drugstore or Sally’s Beauty Supply and pick up a pair of Ardell false lashes (~$4-5) instead. Some good picks for Asian eyes are #109 and #110.

If you want something more natural, you can also try Ardell Duralash ($3-5). They are mini individual lashes used to increase lash density or to fill in gaps along your natural lashes. These can also be applied just to the outer corners without appearing fake or unnatural.

2. Eyelid Glue and Tape
Besides makeup, you can also create a crease with the use of one of the most popular Asian beauty gadgets, eyelid glue or eyelid tape. The eyelid glue is normally applied on the eyelid before a v-shaped applicator/fork is used to push the skin in to create a fold. Here is a clip on how it is done by Koji, a Japanese brand that specializes in eye and nail products.

The tape works in similar way but takes more practice to use. In most cases, you have to trim the tape to make sure it fits the shape of your eye and it can feel a little uncomfortable. The tape is also not as natural and if you are not wearing any eye makeup with it, it can look a little weird. The good thing however, is you can wear it even when you are sleeping. A friend of mine used the tape religiously day and night (even while she was sleeping) for a couple of years and one morning, she woke up with a crease and she has had a crease ever since. I don’t know if this method really works but I guess it is worth a try since it is not as risky as surgery.

3. Double Eyelid Surgery
Finally, we have the double eyelid surgery, aka Asian blepharoplasty. It has always been a HUGE thing in Asia, especially in Japan and Korea. The procedure can cost up to $3,500 in the US but only about $800 to $1,200 in Korea. The surgery will open up your eye and make applying eye makeup easier. However, results vary and you may not always end up looking better. Asymmetry, exaggerated folds, eyelashes pointing at different angles, eyelids that lose the fold after a couple years, unwanted extra “accessory” lines and eyes that appear unnaturally large are all some of the potential aftermath. Plus surgery is surgery, there is always the risk of infection, scarring and blindness.
