Celebrity Makeup Breakdown: Hyolee

March 12, 2008

Korean pop sensation Hyolee is no doubt one of the most versatile Asian celebrities out there. Her looks and style have changed significantly over the years, from a sweet, innocent-looking girl from Finkl to *the* sex symbol in Korea.

Look #1: Tan and Glowy
This look is from her first solo album, Stylish, back in 2003

Face
Even out your skin with tinted moisturizer and camouflage any blemishes/undereye circles with concealer. Dust a light layer of loose powder to set. Apply an apricot blush along your cheekbones.

Eyes
Sweep a shimmery beige color (try M·A·C Shroom Eyeshadow) on your entire lid and a copper eyeshadow (try M·A·C Mythology Eyeshadow) on the outer corner of your eyes. Line your upper lashline with a black liquid liner and only 1/4 of your lower lashline with the copper eyeshadow. Highlight the inner corner of yours eyes with the same beige color used earlier and brush on a few coats of mascara.

Lips
Pucker up with a rosy pink color like M·A·C Viva Glam V Lipstick.

Look #2: Smoky and Sultry
In this look taken from a Cosmo spread last year, Hyolee is sizzling hot with dark hair, bronzed skin, dark smoky eyes and pale lips.

Face
Start out with a perfect canvas by evening out your skin with foundation/tinted moisturizer and covering flaws with concealer. If you are on the oily side, set with a thin layer of translucent powder. Next, apply a soft pastel pink color (try M·A·C Light Flush Mineralize Skinfinish) along your cheekbones and highlight your t-zone with an extra fine shimmer powder for an extra glow.

Eyes
Rim your upper and lower lashlines and color in your entire eyelid with a black kohl pencil (try M·A·C Eye Kohl in Smolder). Swipe a perwinkle color (M·A·C Parfait Amour Eyeshadow) over your eyelid and blend all the way past your crease. Highlight the area under your brow bone and the inner corners of your eyes with a shimmery beige color (NARS All About Eve Duo Eyeshadow) to really make your eyes pop. Finish with tons of black mascara and false lashes.

Lips
If you have pigmented lips, apply a sheer layer of foundation before plumping them up with a soft nude pink color (M·A·C Underage Lipglass).

the 2nd look has a bit too much of the highlighter/shimmer thing going on imo.

also, phyllis..when do you plan to send out the BB creams?

Hi 🙂 I always enjoy your beauty breakdowns.

I have a question: I noticed in most cases the daytime looks worn by women with Asian eyes consist of nothing more than pale shadow all over & dark liner. And by the evening (or for special occasions) the liner simply gets darker & thicker. For example,
Ara had the same simple (yet chic) look ever though it was an ad.

I have mixed blood, thus, semi-asian eyes (small, dark, almond-shaped, deep-set, with a crease) and I never had any success with medium to dark eyeshadows. Well except for superdramatic smokey eye perhaps, but even then it looks soft of heavy.

I actually like dramatic eye makeup but I’m way too pale to pull off the Dracula bride look, and “neutral” medium gray & brown shadows make me look like I got some dirt on my top lid. No bigger eyes, no better defined eyes, sadness!

Would you also recommend avoiding medium to dark colors and playing with different eyeliners & pale shadows instead? I imagine combos like gunmetal gray liner & pale pink or gold shadow would work perhaps? Or dark violet and shimmery white? I’m neutral-cool toned.
