Runway Beauty: Richard Chai Love S/S 2012 Makeup Breakdown

At the Richard Chai Love S/S 2012 show, lead makeup artist James Kaliardos for MAC Cosmetics created a “Japanese Harajuku girl meets Venice Beach girl” look to balance off the “explosion of color and texture” of the collection.

Pairing bright colors of pink and orange on the eyes or vibrant blue or purple on the lips against minimal, healthy-looking skin, James says “it’s just a great choice for spring because color not only brightens up your face, it brightens up your whole atmosphere… it can really help to pull you out of depression.”

Face: Dr. Jart Premium Beauty Balm or Water Fuse Beauty Balm to moisturize.

Eyes: MAC Pro Genuine Orange Chromaline or Magenta Chroma applied with a brush, thicker in the corner and brushed lightly across the rest of the lid.

Lips: MAC Pro Chromagraphic Pencil in Hi-Def Cyan or MAC Pro Amplified Lipstick in Violetta painted on with a brush.

I have always loved the idea of pairing black eyeliner with bright orange lips and apparently, Dick Page, Artistic Director of Shiseido, do too. Just look at the gorgeous matte orange lips, rosy cheeks and glossy eyes at the Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring 2011 show. Lovesss!

To create the look, Dick applied Perfect Rouge Lipstick in Day Lily on the lips. He mixed various shades of Luminizing Satin Face Color on the cheeks for a rosy glow and only applied foundation as needed. He also darkened the upper and lower lashlines with Smoothing Eyeliner Pencil in Black and finished the look with a clear gloss on the eyes.

At the Oscar de la Renta Spring/Summer 2011 show, Gucci Westman, Revlon’s Global Artistic Director, created “a modern day princess” look to go with the feminine prints and rich color.

“The clothes are so beautiful – classic Oscar,” says Westman. “We wanted the girls to be vibrant and happy and chose to highlight the face with rich green shades on the eye. The jewel-tones just pop and compliment the entire collection. It’s a great way to lighten up the traditional smoky eye for spring.”

Estée Lauder Creative Makeup Director Tom Pecheux teamed up with manicurist Jin Soon Choi to give models bright orange-shaded eyes, nude lips, peachy-bronzed cheeks and neutral nails at the Derek Lam Spring 2011 show.

“Working with Derek Lam is a true creative collaboration, he loves to bend the rules the way I do. So I created the focus on the eyes with products that are actually made for the lips. New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011 Backstage Beauty Breakdown: Jason Wu

With a Forties-meets-Seventies theme at the Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2011 show, eyes dazzled in bold hues of purple, green and blue while the hair was braided and twisted into girly buns. The one word that comes to mind? GORGEOUS!

Diane Kendal, the lead makeup artist for the show, used Supreme Aupres (a new line under Shiseido for the Chinese market) to create the winged-out smoky eye in three set of shades – purple paired with pink, green with gold, and blue mixed with silver. The skin was kept fresh and clean and a tad of pink blush and nude lip finished the look.

For the hair, Odile Gilbert for Aveda–Odile Gilbert for Aveda created a look that is “simple yet sophisticated, with 1970’s inspiration”. Chiffon – scraps from the collection – was braided into the hair and the ends were twisted into a flower to capture the happiness and excitement of spring and summer.

To create the look,

1. Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Style-Prep Smoother™ for smoothness and to tame flyaways. Use a fine-tooth comb to create a strong, clean part on the right side of the head and then blow dry straight using a Mason Pearson brush.

2. Pull hair tightly back and separate into four sections along the nape of the neck. Spray each with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for shine and flexible hold.

3. Tie a long ribbon or piece of fabric – in a shade close to the hair color – around the top of each section of hair.

4. One section at a time, braid the fabric through the hair and secure at the bottom with an elastic. Leave excess fabric out at the bottom of each braid. Spray each braid liberally with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray for ultra-strong hold.

5. Collect all four braids and tie the fabric into one large bow at the end to create a ‘flower.’

6. Pull the fabric ‘flower’ upwards and secure at the nape of the neck with hair pins, creating beautiful braided loops stemming from the flower. Finish the look with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray.
