Runway Beauty: Vivienne Tam S/S 2012 Makeup

Inspired by a Japanese zen garden, Maybelline New York makeup artist Andy Koh created a 70′s inspired look with clean, natural skin, long lashes and metallic eyes and lips.

Face
To create flattering contours and angles, two different shades of Fit Me Foundation were used. Andy used a lighter shade to focus on the T-zone area and a deeper shade around the outer edges of the face.

Eyes
The gold and green hues of Eye Studio Color Explosion Luminizing Eyeshadow in Forest Furywere applied on the upper eyelid while the copper shade of Eye Studio Color Plush Silk Eyeshadow in Irresistible Ivy defined the crease and outer corner of the lower lid to create a glowy effect. Lashes were coated with Volumn’ Express The Falsies Waterproof Mascara in Black Drama on both top and bottom for a long, thick look.

Lips
To add color and shine, Andy applied Color Sensational High Shine Lipcolor in Coral Luster on the lips before topping with Shine Sensational Lip Gloss in Minty Sheer.

Runway Beauty: Chloe Fall 2011 Makeup Breakdown

Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury working for MAC Cosmetics created a “pure ’70s hippy chic” look at the Chole Fall 2011 show with chocolate brown lids and freckled skin.

Face
* Studio Moisture Cream blended with Select Cover-up Concealer – blended over skin for a radiant, light coverage
* Medium, Meidium Deep or Dark Mineralize Skinfinish – used in the appropriate shade to contour the cheeks and warm the center of face
* Cork and Stone Lip Pencils – used to imitate a smattering of freckles across the nose and cheeks
* MAC Pro Invisible Set Powder – applied over the middle of the face where needed

Eyes
* MAC Pro Dark Brown Cream Colour Base – all around the eye, very diffused so it is soft not smoky
* Studio Moisture Cream – appliced over the upper eyelids for a moist, but not glass sheen
* MAC Pro Lash Curler – used to achieve a super curled upper lash
* Zoomblack Zoom Lash Mascara – several coats on both upper and lower lashes
* Fling or Lingering Eye Brows – accentuates and sculpts the brows

Lips
* Freckletone Lipstick – patted on the lips and then lightly powdered, for a creamy finish

London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011 Backstage Beauty Breakdown: Giles

At the Giles Spring 2011 show during London Fashion Week, MAC makeup artist Miranda Joyce created a “Mick Jagger in performance meets the Seventies Drag Act” look with loads of glitter on the eyes and orange lips.

Face
* Face and Body Foundation – where needed, fresh skin is so important so this look stays modern.

Eye
* MAC Pro Gold Glitter – over the lids, packed on tight at the lash line, applied onto mixing medium lash with a 242 brush.
* MAC Pro Turquoise or Pro Pink Glitter – applied in the same way all around the gold and up into the brows, applied in a “C” shape beneath the eyes in a free and arty, not perfect, style.
* Plushblack Plush Lash Mascara – several coats on top and bottom lashes
* Brows bleached if necessary.

Lip
* Lady Danger Lipstick – softly applied.
* Clear Lipglass – for a full-on vinyl finish.

Once again, François Nars, Founder & Creative Director of NARS Cosmetics, created the glossy green eyes and deep matte lips at the Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2011 show.

“The look is very reminiscent of Angelica Houston in the 70s – the bleached brows and the deep eyes,” said François. “I wanted them to look like iconic models from the 70s with a modern approach. Marc had images of what he wanted the makeup to look like – mimicking the colors of the clothing but not matching exactly.”

New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011 Backstage Beauty Breakdown: Jason Wu

With a Forties-meets-Seventies theme at the Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2011 show, eyes dazzled in bold hues of purple, green and blue while the hair was braided and twisted into girly buns. The one word that comes to mind? GORGEOUS!

Diane Kendal, the lead makeup artist for the show, used Supreme Aupres (a new line under Shiseido for the Chinese market) to create the winged-out smoky eye in three set of shades – purple paired with pink, green with gold, and blue mixed with silver. The skin was kept fresh and clean and a tad of pink blush and nude lip finished the look.

For the hair, Odile Gilbert for Aveda–Odile Gilbert for Aveda created a look that is “simple yet sophisticated, with 1970’s inspiration”. Chiffon – scraps from the collection – was braided into the hair and the ends were twisted into a flower to capture the happiness and excitement of spring and summer.

To create the look,

1. Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Style-Prep Smoother™ for smoothness and to tame flyaways. Use a fine-tooth comb to create a strong, clean part on the right side of the head and then blow dry straight using a Mason Pearson brush.

2. Pull hair tightly back and separate into four sections along the nape of the neck. Spray each with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for shine and flexible hold.

3. Tie a long ribbon or piece of fabric – in a shade close to the hair color – around the top of each section of hair.

4. One section at a time, braid the fabric through the hair and secure at the bottom with an elastic. Leave excess fabric out at the bottom of each braid. Spray each braid liberally with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray for ultra-strong hold.

5. Collect all four braids and tie the fabric into one large bow at the end to create a ‘flower.’

6. Pull the fabric ‘flower’ upwards and secure at the nape of the neck with hair pins, creating beautiful braided loops stemming from the flower. Finish the look with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray.
