NYX Cosmetics Jumbo Eye Pencil Review and Swatches

January 24, 2011

After hearing lots of good things about NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils, I finally got my hands on some.

These over-sized pencils are about the same size as NARS Soft Touch Shadow Pencil and can double as eyeliner and eyeshadow. They come in a huge selection of 28 shades with shimmery and matte finishes. Colors range from your regular black and brown to bright yellow, electric blue and hot pink to pastel green, soft lavender and white.

JEP617 Iced Mocha is a shimmery warm taupe.
JEP612 Gold is a shimmery copper.
JEP605 Strawberry Milk is a shimmery baby pink.

Thanks to the mineral oils and powders, the pencils have a creamy texture that glided on effortlessly without tugging or pulling the skin. They also gave great pigmentation and left behind a glossy sheen that looks like a cream eyeshadow.

When worn alone, the pencils stayed on pretty well on my lower lid but did crease a bit on the upper lid. If you intend to wear these as an eyeshadow, you will definitely need to use a primer underneath.

Alternatively, you can wear them as an eyeshadow base and layer a powder eyeshadow on top. When used as a base, I did not experience any creasing or fading at all and it makes the powder eyeshadow stand out more.

My only complaint was finding the right sharpener. None of the sharpeners I have – MAC, Maybelline, Revlon and Red Earth – would fit so chances are you will need to purchase the NYX Pencil Sharpener as well.

Other than that, NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils are great and totally worth the hype. Thumbs up!

You should try the Urban Decay Grindhouse sharpener. It fits the NYX Jumbo pencils perfectly!

mmm I haven’t needed to sharpen mine yet, but I’m guessing that the Maybelline/Covergirl sharpeners would work fine for these. The colors you have are really pretty, my HG is Milk, and I’ve also got my eye on Black Bean.

Which Maybelliner sharpener are you referring to? Mine didn’t fit =(

MILK & BLACK BEAN are sooo necessary… I’m talkin daily basis!!! I also love gold & pacific (a periwinkle blue). However I was unimpressed by yogurt, rocky mountain green, purple… they just didn’t have a good payoff on me *shrugs shoulders*

I’m dying to try orange, yellow, hot pink & cherry, but Ulta’s always sold out 🙁

My NYX eyeliner is lined with plastic, will I still be able to sharpen it with NYX shapender?
