How To: Choose Color Contact Lens

Unlike clear contact lens, colored lenses can change your look completely in seconds (which explains its HUGE popularity all over the world!) I personally *love* them and my favorite ones are Freshlook Colorblends, Geo Angel and Tri-Color Lenses.

Types of Color Contacts
* Enhancement Lenses: This type of lenses are made of semi-transparent material that will blend with your natural eye color to enhance your eyes. Some of them, like Freshlook’s Colorblends and Geo’s Tri-Color Lenses, have different colors blended together to give the most natural look. You can choose a color similar to your natural eye color or you can go with something totally different.

* Opaque Lenses: This type of lenses are made with opaque material to change your eye color dramatically and Paris Hilton used to wear this too (she uses Natural touch in Baby Blue to change her naturally brown eyes blue). Opaque lenses normally come in solid colors like green, gray, blue and brown etc. If you have dark eyes and want to change your eye color completely, this will probably be your best bet.

* Circle Lens:Unlike the other two, these have a black rim on the outside of your iris (hence the name circle) to make your eyes appear bigger and brighter. They are currently the “it” thing in Asia and they come in a variety of colors like black, brown, gray, violet, blue and green. They will give the most dramatic effect and get you all the attention you deserve.

How To Choose A Color That Is Right For You
When choosing the color, you may want to consider your ethnicity, natural eye color, natural skin tone and the look you are going for. Obviously, if you are Caucasian, blue, green, gray, brown and hazel will look natural on you whereas brown is definitely the most natural and fool-proof color for everyone.

If you are looking for something a little more dramatic, bright colors like violet or aqua would be perfect. These colors also tend to stand out more on those with darker skin tones.

Another thing to consider when choosing your color contacts is how you wear your eye makeup.

Just remember the same pair of contacts can look very different on different people – even two people with the same hair color, eye color and skin tone. I highly recommend you to try out different colors to find your perfect match.

  1. Hey Phyllis! I’ve been reading your blog for a while now, and I think I remember you mentioning a while back that circle lens can cause blindness. Was that proved false?

  2. how do you think these contacts would look like on small eyes with no eyelids? … because that’s my case and i would love to try them out.

  3. hey! i was reading your old entry on dry skin (http://makeupforlife.blogspot.com/2006/03/dry-skin-regime.html)
and i just wanted to ask what the eye creams (MAC Fast Response Eye Cream and Benefit Eyecon) do for you?

i use Clinique all about eyes (a hydrating light eye creme)and it worked well when i first used it in Hong Kong last summer, but now that i’ve used it for almost a year and i’m living in dry Vancouver… i find myself getting dry lines. i have hereditary eye bags and undereye circles too :( so i was wondering what those eye creams help you do, and as much as we all want an eye cream that takes away dark circles, puffiness, and eye bags, no cream can do all that. what is the closest thing that you have used?

    thanks so much!!

  4. TO THE ANONYMOUS PEOPLE:

I have a friend with small eyes and no eyelids and she wanted to get circle lens to make her eyes bigger but her eyes were so small, it looked like the whole circle lens blocked out her eye! she got the black circle kind and her eye was basically covered in black, side to side!!! so if you have super small eyes, don’t go for it! so or a bright color or opaque lens, not those huge circle lenses! :D

AND fabulous post, phyllis!!! what’s your favorite color to wear in colorblends?

  5. Hi Phyllis! are you going to be ordering circle lens any time soon?! I kept missing out on the orders from last year! =( xx

  6. hey..i have dark skin and have natural brown eyes..wanna make them look light brown and somehow “natural” or not” too fake”..anyhow…u think tri-colouor hazel lenses wud fit? seen as i cant find light brown?
    thanx hun

  7. Hi.. you said when choosing a color think about your race. I’m African American but I have small almond shaped eyes (sort of Asian like most people say), what could be a good color for me? I want the Geo Angel Grey circle lens but I’m not sure if that will look good.

Btw, I’m not like super dark but not light skinned. Like Gabrielle Union.

  8. hi phyllis,

I was wondering if you sell colored contact lenses? I like the one angela baby is wearing from her blog. it looks very natural. I tried once from fresh kon, many said i look confuse because of the designs.

  9. Hi Phyllis,

How much are the Circle Lens?

Do you sell the GEO Angel Circle Lens in Black, Brown, or Violet? If not, do you know where I can get them?

    Thank you!

Love your blog by the way! :)

  10. I am into contact lenses since I was a kid and so far so good… I am actually collecting colors which I can match with my fashion dresses. Before I only use contact lenses for looks and beauty but now it is more than that and I am so thankful for the health benefits that I derive from it.

    • Hi Sheryl,

Have you tried Freshlook Colorblends? They are definitely one of the most natural color contacts I have used.
