MAC Prep + Prime Face Protect SPF 50 Review

April 14, 2007

From the latest Prep + Prime Collection comes MAC Prep + Prime Face Protect SPF 50.

Described as “an antioxidant-rich lotion that protects skin from broad spectrum UVA/UVB rays”, the MAC Prep + Prime Face Protect SPF 50 felt super lightweight and hardly greasy on, just like my favorite Biotherm Sunfitness Revitalizing Sunscreen for Face SPF 15, which I am going to replace.

The lotion sank into my skin right away and did not leave behind a white cast like some sunscreens do. I also loved that it was specially formulated with oil-absorbing powder to help prevent oil breakthrough. Plus the high SPF value means you get to skip sunscreen which is double yay for lazy people like me.

My only gripe is how tiny the bottle was but other than that, I *love* this product.

MAC Prep + Prime Face Protect SPF 50 is available at maccosmetics.com and MAC counters for $26.50.

Thank you for another great review Phyllis! I was wondering if you could write a review on other brands of foundation primers. Particularly the clear makeup ones because I have tried the MAC prep + prime skin and it made me feel like a discoball and coloured foundation bases always slightly alter the colour of my foundation. I have combination/sensitive skin (shiny tzone, sensitive cheeks). Have you heard anything about Philosophy The Present or Smashbox Photofinish? It would be great if you could write something about them.

I just went out and purchased the Prep+Prime with SP50 today. It creates an amazingly smooth finish. It goes on pretty white, as most things with a lot of SPF, but it absorbs so quickly into the skin! I can see how you love this product because I’m loving it too!

P.S. I agree about the other Prep+Prime product. It goes on a lot lighter — as it’s more watery — but it’s way too shimmery, especially for the face for the day time. The first product definitely makes for a better based for makeup application or just a general matte finish.

Liz, what kind of finish are you looking for? If you want something shimmery, check out Lancome’s Flash Bronzer Instant Colour Self-Tanning Leg Gel with Pure Vitamin E. If you just want some color, check out Avene’s Self-tanning lotion – I use this on my face and I LOVE it!
