Makeup Tutorial: How To Apply Strip False Lashes

July 31, 2006

I have done an entry on falsies in the past but a lot of people have been asking about them so here’s a tutorial with pictures. I hope this helps!

Before and After

What you will need:

* A pair of strip false lashes
* Eyelash glue
* Tweezers
* Scissors
* Eyelash curler
* Bobby pin or a false lashes clip
* Eyeliner
* Mascara

Step 1. Do your eye makeup as you would normally and remember to line your top lashes.

Step 2. Choose a pair of strip false lashes that you want to wear. I am wearing a pair of false lashes from Taiwan.

Step 3. Take them out from the box carefully and trim them a little to make sure they fit the shape and length of your eye.

Step 4. Curl your lashes and apply 1-2 coats of mascara.

Step 5. Pick up the falsies with a pair of tweezers or a clip made specifically for applying falsies. Ardell and Sephora both make one.

Step 6. Put some glue on the strip (I love Duo’s Waterproof Eyelash Glue) but avoid putting too much or it will become a mess.

Step 7. Let the glue dry for 5 to 10 seconds or until it turns tacky.

Step 8. Press the strip onto the base of your lashes. Hold for a few seconds.

If you do not have a clip, use the end of a bobby pin to gently press the falsies along your lash line. Start in the middle then work towards the inner and outer corners.

Step 9. Readjust if necessary.

Step 10. Once the glue is completely dry, make sure there are no spaces between your lash line and the fake lashes. If you see a white line, it means the lashes should be put closer to your lash line. You can either start all over or fix the problem by filling in the gap with a black liner.

Step 11. Apply mascara onto your natural lashes so they blend in with the falsies. Alternatively, just curl them with an eyelash curler.

Voila! Big eyes in no time!

    Thank you for this post – very helpful and you make putting falsies effortless! Questions: What kind of clip is that, can’t really tell from the pic? And, do you have any favorite eyelash curlers? Thank you!

  • Reply Phyllis July 31, 2006 at 5:42 pm

    I *love* my Shiseido eyelash curler and I have heard good things about Shu Uemura’s.

    The clip is just a clip for applying falsies that I picked up at a Japanese store. I don’t have the box anymore so I don’t know the name of it but on the clip it says “tuke-matuge” clip. Can someone who understands Japanese translate this?

    tsuke-matsuge (つけまつげ) means false eyelashes (付け睫毛) =)

    By the way, thanks for this post! I like it~

    i’ve been wanting a shiseido eyelash curler. where can you find this?

  • Reply Phyllis July 31, 2006 at 11:30 pm

    I am sure they sell the curler at the Shiseido counters in the department stores here too. I got mine in Hong Kong and it’s a little different than the one they sell here.

    Oh, I always thought you had to close your lid to put on falsies. I’ll try applying them with open eyes this time 🙂 Ardell gives a false-lashes clip when you buy their “beginners kit”, but it doesn’t look as sturdy as your japanese one. Hey Phyllis, is there a special way to take care of your falsies in order to maximize their life-span (3 to 4 uses?) How do you clean off the glue (if possible?) Thanks!

  • Reply Phyllis August 1, 2006 at 7:54 pm

    well you can apply the falsies with your eyes closed but I prefer tilting my chin up a bit and looking downwards with my eyes open.

    I can use the same pair of falsies for up to at least 2 weeks. the key to keeping them in shape is to treat them like your first born(seriously!) I will write an entry on this later this week so keep checking back!

    Thanks for the post, this is REALLY helpful!
    I’ve been using Shu Uemura eyelash curler for the past 8 years and before that, I was just using regular drugstore brands, primarily Revlon, and I honestly love it and I’m pleased with the results every day. I’ve been curious in trying other brands, but I’m pretty set on the Shu Uemura. Regarding the japanese clip, do you know if it is available online? Thank you!

  • Reply Phyllis August 2, 2006 at 1:07 pm

    hi Kristy, I’m sorry but I do not know where you can get the clip online. Where are you located in?

    hi there phyllis! i’d like to ask will wear falsies affect ur natural lashes? As in does it cause ur natural lashes to fall off? and how do you remove falsies? =) thanks!

    in earlier posts you used MAC pigments (like frost) as a highlighter for the bridge of your nose and brow bone. what are some shades from MAC i can use as a highlighter that are not shimmery but subtle? or can you recommend other highlighters? thank you!

  • Reply Mango August 3, 2006 at 1:41 am

    Wow I never seen a eyelash applicator. I need to go find one. Thanks for the amazing tutorial I love fake eyelashes (:

    Hi Phyllis! I am located in Los Angeles, CA. Thanks for getting back to me! I forgot to ask…when you trim the eyelashes, do you trim exactly up to the corner of the eye or a little before? I love the look of falsies on, but I have not yet mastered the technique! Thanks again. I love your blog and your wonderful tips. 🙂

    Thanks for this post, i *HEART* your blog!
    Just a personal opinion, i think you look really pretty witout eye-makeup like your pics in this post (i.e pigments/eyeshadows), in fact your eyes look bigger and the double eyelids look a lot more obvious, giving you a fresh yet dreamy look. :))

    i cannot fathom doing an entire makeup routine AND putting on eyelashes..tell us truthfully – how much time do you spend in the mornings doing your face? that’s amazing!

  • Reply Phyllis January 18, 2007 at 5:24 pm

    haha thanks! I don’t always go all out in the mornings. It’s usually just concealer, liner, falsies and a bit of blush and that takes me like 10 minutes or so. I would rather sleep than spend an hour doing my makeup in the mornings =P

    i’m not understanding..cutting it to fit ur eye. do u mean the length of it??

  • Reply alice February 17, 2007 at 2:35 am

    do you curl your natural lashes before putting on your falsies? sounds like ur not using mascara..your lashes don’t straighten out after a while? i feel like mine would. 🙁

  • Reply Phyllis February 17, 2007 at 11:44 am

    hey Alice, I do curl my lashes before I put on the falsies (see step 4).

    As for mascara, I think it’s totally optional. Some people use it before and after applying the falsies for a more dramatic effect or to help blend their natural lashes and the falsies together. However, I personally don’t do that all the time because
    I don’t like how the mascara messes up the falsies. I would therefore suggest you to do whichever that suits you.

    i just wan to ask how to put lower fake lashes?

  • Reply ChinoisBabe March 16, 2007 at 9:03 am

    I’m wondering where you get Ardell lashes from in London? In Paris? A lash applicator can be bought from Sephora and being new to false eyelashes it is a God send! I have found No. 25 MAC eyelashes, which are for lower lashes, to be very good with shorter Asian eyelashes if you’re wanting a more natural look.
    Thanks for an excellent and informative blog, I’m loving it!I have only one negative comment to make about it – it has put a HUGE dent on my credit card!!!

  • Reply Phyllis March 17, 2007 at 5:16 am

    ChinoisBabe, I got my Ardell lashes in the US. I’ve been trying to find it here in London and trust me I’ve tried EVERYWHERE but they just don’t sell them =(

    Thanks for this tutorial, I’ve been attempting to try the false lash look for a long time.
    Just a question though – what if the falsies are too long in length (i.e. not the length of the band, but the length of the lashes themselves). I find that if I attempt to trim them, the ends will be blunt, as opposed to tappered like natural lash tips

  • Reply Phyllis March 19, 2007 at 3:09 pm

    Hey meme, I totally get what you mean! When I first started trimming them, the ends got all blunt too.

    The key is to cut them at a certain angle and try not to cut a lot of them at the same time.

  • Reply meme March 20, 2007 at 2:58 pm

    Hi Phyllis, thanks for the tips on trimming the lash length, it worked when I trimmed at an angle!
    Now here’s a problem I encountered while actually applying the lashes. After I apply the lashes using a clip, they don’t stay on even after the glue has dried. I’ve tried putting a bit more glue but that doesn’t seem to help. What else am I doing incorrectly?
    Thanks!

  • Reply Anonymous March 23, 2007 at 2:18 pm

    Thanks for the great tut!
    When you apply lashes, is the inner corner side suppose to be applied right at the inner corner of the eye or a little after that? What about the outter corner, what is the correct spot the false lashes should end at?

  • Reply Phyllis March 27, 2007 at 7:02 am

    Meme, putting more glue doesn’t help – sometimes it can do the opposite. What you should do is make sure you press the strip lashes right above your natural lashes and hold for a few seconds and make sure the glue is completely dry before you do anything else. You might also want to try a different brand of glue. I personally think Duo is the best and I never have problems with the lashes not staying on.

    Phyllis here is a website i found on a forum which sells Ardell lashes. The person who posted has bought from them and was happy with the service. Which ones would you say give the most natural look for asian eyes/lashes?

  • Reply Phyllis March 30, 2007 at 3:00 pm

    Yah I know about that website but they charge a lot more to ship outside of the US =(

    For a natural look, try #109 and #110. Go to the following entry for pics:

    This was so helpful! Thank you very much.
    I was wondering if there are any tips on removing them because whenever I peel off my fake eyelashes and remove my makeup I always end up with some glue left on my eyelashes and I don’t want to rub them or pick at them for 20 minutes lol

  • Reply Hallie November 25, 2009 at 11:40 am

    I loved your tutorial. Thanks for all of the great tips. I usually manage to get false lashes on fairly well considering I don’t use them too often, but I would love to wear them more often. Just too time consuming and I think that is because of two things. Clearly, practice will likely help me agreat deal in the speed of application. The question I had is how to adjust them before the glue is totally dry or if there is a way to adjust once the duo adhesive has dried. It seems that one corner always ends up not sticking for me after I finish. Thanks for any tips!

    Thank you for your tips. Where can I get the clip from Malaysia that showed on your tutorial? It’s very difficult to put the real lashes and the falsies together because my lashes are short.
